Horror anthologies are a dime-a-dozen, but they rarely work as well as this one does, with its brisk pacing and excellent casting, and its alluring combination of prankish humor and sincere dread.

[Director Michael] Dougherty takes a cue from Tarantino and plays with the format, stirring up, intercutting, and at times interweaving the strands into a smartly paced, playfully directed and entertainingly atmospheric collection.

The film is simply too original and too fun to be considered anything less than a creative achievement.
