Navin Johnson, the white adopted son of a black Alabama sharecropper family, learns that his pen pal, Marie, is set to wed Count Marco in Los Angeles. Navin teams up with a hobo named Diesel, and the pair discovers Navin's talent for poker. After detouring to Las Vegas to raise travel funds, Navin arrives in L.A. and crashes Marie's engagement party, finally confronting his true feelings for her.
