The tension in 'Last Breath' will make you gasp.

A bare-bones thriller based on a true story, it’s the kind of film that gives audiences exactly what they would expect coming in and delivers in workmanlike fashion.

The film wisely clocks in at just over 90 minutes, giving a sense of urgency that serves the story well. The watery recreations are well done; If you fear drowning as much as I do, these scenes will be even more effective.

The writing is a bit thin and it struggles to balance character with action. However, when it's just showing us what happened and acting as a pseudo live-action documentary, it's quite riveting.

Ought to be riveting but instead is merely workmanlike, efficient rather than viscerally exciting...the relentlessness the story demands seeps away, and the big moments fail to register as they should.
