I think it is a disgrace and a moral offense to take short stories by Hemingway and a piece of a novel and combine them with incidents from his life in a sentimental pastiche which is then presented as some sort of biographical film.

There are a few virtuoso cameos, notably Paul Newman's sketch of a punchdrunk fighter, but Richard Beymer is too pale and pretty to be convincing in the central role.

While the film has been executed with concern, integrity and respect for the pen from which it flows, it has a disquieting tendency to oscillate between flashes of artistry and truth and interludes of mechanics and melodramatics.

Based on Hemingway's short stories, Martin Ritt's chronicle is long, rambling, disappointing film in which Richard Beymer is miscast as the young novelist.
