A terrifying, shockingly good film. Bernard Rose follows the creepy Paperhouse with this mesmerizing film about a graduate student (Madsen) writing her thesis on Candyman (Todd), a murderous character said to stalk the ghettos of Chicago. Madsen believes that Candyman is an urban legend, but soon discovers that the world is not as simple as her education has taught her. A rare horror film that has something to say, dealing with race and class along with a though-provoking exploration of the nature and power of belief. A faithful adaptation of Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden", Candyman is a horror masterpiece.

Critics Consensus: Though it ultimately sacrifices some mystery in the name of gory thrills, Candyman is a nuanced, effectively chilling tale that benefits from an interesting premise and some fine performances.
