Jonathan Majors excels in Magazine Dreams, but the film is too artificial to measure up to Taxi Driver, from which it clearly takes inspiration.

Magazine Dreams needed a few more passes at the screenplay stage to come up to the level its brilliant central performance deserves.

With a stunningly committed performance from Jonathan Majors, who puts his body on the line and imbues every scene with deeply unsettling energy, "Magazine Dreams" is incredibly difficult to watch — sometimes in a good way, and sometimes not.

Bynum takes his themes so far that the film feels like an overly long exercise in pretension. It's repetitive, shocking, and angry, and the more combative content feels like he’s trying too hard to be provocative solely for the sake of being so.

While overly long and meandering at times, Jonathan Majors carries the film and makes it almost impossible to look away.
