The feisty, domineering cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Spencer Tracy) rules his vast empire with a ruthless hand. Because Matt's greatest love is for his Indian wife, Princess (Katy Jurado) and their son Joe (Robert Wagner), Matt's three sons from a previous marriage deeply resent them. After Joe agrees to go to jail for a crime his father commits, he returns three years later to a different world; his father has died and his vengeful brothers control the land.

“Broken Lance” is a well-told and brilliantly directed Western that also features great acting, impactful drama, and lots of highly immersive cinematography

What is also noteworthy is the laborious dutifulness with which CinemaScope is used in Broken Lance, which gives the mise-en-scène a rigidity that makes for a certain dryness. Such severity, as one might guess, is not for me.

It's a gripping, framed familial saga of intergenerational misunderstandings, racial hang-ups, and eventually even a court-room drama.

The camera work, in improved widescreen CinemaScope, is handsome.
