Since its debut in 2007, "Trick ‘r Treat" has become an essential watch, mandatory during each Halloween season. Even knowing the outcome, we return to it year after year, as its themes continue to resonate with us.

Horror anthologies are a dime-a-dozen, but they rarely work as well as this one does, with its brisk pacing and excellent casting, and its alluring combination of prankish humor and sincere dread.

[Director Michael] Dougherty takes a cue from Tarantino and plays with the format, stirring up, intercutting, and at times interweaving the strands into a smartly paced, playfully directed and entertainingly atmospheric collection.

The film is simply too original and too fun to be considered anything less than a creative achievement.
