A wealthy judge coaxes the brilliant but eccentric neurological surgeon Dr. Vollin out of retirement to save the life of his daughter, a dancer who was injured in an automobile accident. Vollin restores her but becomes obsessed with her, cooking up a scheme to kidnap her and recruiting an escaped criminal to help him in his sinister plan.

Lugosi and Karloff are terrifyingly effective us usual. Irene Ware and Lester Mathews provide the romantic interest.

What inspired the makers of The Raven would be hard to say, but one can be reasonably certain that it wasn't the poem of Edgar Poe, whose title they have appropriated.

Followers of horror melodramas will get a full evening's entertainment out of The Raven for it has some hair-raising situations; but intelligent audiences may laugh at the far-fetched situations.

The film is noteworthy for the fact that it presents the art of make-up at its height.
