Academy Award winners Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep star in this passionate tale of two lives irrevocably linked--a lonely farmer's wife and a traveling photographer who share a romantic affair that, although brief, affects both profoundly. In the fall of 1965, photographer Robert Kincaid (Eastwood) pulls his pickup truck into the drive of Francesca Johnson's (Streep) home to ask for directions. He's come to Iowa to photograph covered bridges for National Geographic magazine. Her husband and two children have gone to the Illinois state fair, and after 15 years of marriage the luxury of time to herself is an unusual break from her daily life ... as is the courteous stranger approaching her for information. In the few short days before these two separate, they discover love, choices and the consequences that will stay with both of them for the rest of their lives.

Critics Consensus: Sentimental, slow, schmaltzy, and very satisfying, The Bridges of Madison County finds Clint Eastwood adapting a bestseller with heft, wit, and grace.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that The Bridges of Madison County is a lushly romantic 1995 drama based on the wildly popular 1992 novel by Robert James Waller that stars director Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep as middle-aged lovers. A married woman has an affair. Kissing and brief scenes of lovers in dim light will probably neither shock nor offend younger teens, but the film's structure underscores the notion that parents have full-fledged, passionate private lives about which their self-absorbed teenaged children may know nothing. Adults smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol. A single utterance of the word "f--k." A glimpse of a bare bottom when two lovers are in bed.
