Once the film digs into the reality below ground, In Darkness begins to take emotional hold, chronicling the true, terrible story of these people who lived a claustrophobic existence for 14 months.

In Darkness is as grim as its title suggests. It's also well worth watching, as a piece of art and as a hymn to the human spirit that, as the movie reminds us, can survive just about anything.

A brutal and thought-provoking drama which serves to remind us why the atrocities of WWII and the people who risked their lives to fight them should never, and can never, be forgotten.

This is straightforward storytelling at its best. The terror they feel is your terror, the stench is real, as is the antipathy you feel towards the hidden, much like the antipathy they feel toward one another.

In Darkness matters because it survives as a chronicle of and testament to an ordinary man who found, within himself, something extraordinary.
