The suspense is well-handled, here and there, but the surprises and shocks are few.

The boys’-club politics at the hospital provide the picture with interesting subtext right in line with the sexual dynamics of the period.

One of the great '70s suspense thrillers (with a peerless Jerry Goldsmith score), this Michael Crichton film of a Robin Cook novel is one of the most influential mysteries of that decade.

Filmmaker Michael Crichton does an effective job of immediately capturing the viewer's interest and attention...

A medical thriller of obvious authenticity... Crichton exploits the suspense with enough skill to make you overlook the far-fetched nature of the premise.
