Academy Award winners Gene Hackman and Al Pacino star as two very different men who develop a profound bond of friendship as they hitchhike east across the United States. While traveling to the east cost to open a car wash, paroled convict Max (Hackman) meets a sailor named Lion (Pacino) who dreams of reuniting with his wife and child after six years. Lion helps Max learn to understand and manage his anger, and Max discovers the fragility of his new friend Lion. But as both learn that they will never realize their goals, they discover a friendship even more important than their former dreams. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Palm D'Or award.

Critics Consensus: If its dramatic dressings are a tad threadbare, Scarecrow survives on the strength of its lead performances and Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography.
