Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney and John Turturro head an all-star cast in Joel and Ethan Coen’s Prohibition era gangster film. When Italian mobsters threaten to undermine the rule of East Coast Irish mob boss Leo (Finney) and Tom, his right-hand man (Byrne), it begins a turf war. But when Tom and Leo fall for the same woman (Marcia Gay Harden), an even more violent power struggle is set in motion.

Byrne is simply outstanding as the cool, calculating catalyst around whom the whole vivid spectacle revolves.

The violence, like the rest of Miller's Crossing, is poetically staged, and strangely tasteful. But the movie's real firepower is the staccato slang of its script.

The Coens created an idiosyncratic film with a serpentine plot that demands repeat viewings and still functions as a strong genre film more than three decades after its release.
