A reimagining of the 2003 hit family comedy about the raucous exploits of a blended family of 12, the Bakers. Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff star as Zoey and Paul, a husband and wife navigating a hectic home life while simultaneously managing their family business, Baker’s Breakfast, a local eatery that serves nothing but breakfast (and Paul’s to-die-for sweet and savory sauce). With expansion plans for the restaurant in the works, Paul decides to move the family to a much bigger house in an upscale suburb, but the move across town and its effect on the kids is more stressful than Paul and Zoey anticipated. With the fate of their loving, tight-knit family in jeopardy, it is up to Paul to find a life that is the perfect size for all their dreams. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

Cheaper by the Dozen is one big missed opportunity. Braff and Union are great together, but the movie wants to do too much, with too little, hindering every good opportunity it has for something awfully familiar and too predictable for its own good.

Beyond the Cinerama Dome

In this rare instance, Cheaper By the Dozen needs more time. Whether that means a longer screenplay or a change of format to a television series, there were enough interesting concepts at play to warrant more time.

Directo Gail Lerner and Barris speak the same language so the direction is tight despite some tone and thematic issues.

This iteration of Cheaper by the Dozen is well-intentioned in that it wants to tell a diverse, inclusive story (mostly, ahem), but in trying to be so broadly representative, there’s no time to tell the myriad stories it wants to tell.
