Critics Consensus: Tom Hanks makes Turner and Hooch more entertaining than it might look on paper, but ultimately, this is still a deeply silly comedy about a cop and a canine.

Sure it’s predictable — Turner hates dogs, Hooch trashes his flat, they eventually bond and solve the crime — but it’s goofy, knockabout fun and the big, loveable pooch nearly matches Hanks for easy screen charisma.

Hanks' taste in picking movie projects continues to be abominable.

Dog-buddy comedy has lots of slobber and some violence.

I laughed heartily with the film, but I almost went cross-eyed trying to consider what the hell this script actually contained before Disney, five screenwriters, and two directors tore it apart.

The rather mechanical style of director Roger Spottiwoode (who took over the film after original director Henry Winkler departed) fails to enliven the stereotypical criminal proceedings.
