There are times when everything flows together, when it’s charming and lovely, with the makings of a cult classic. Then the script...abandons everything that was working well in favor of awkward, stilted scenes that should have been left in the grave.

Just about fun enough to sustain 101 clattering, dusty, dimly lit minutes. Reviews will be mixed. But it has every chance of being resurrected as a cult classic.

The filmmaker is intent on putting a smiley face on pretty disturbing subject matter, but the results come across as a jumble of underdeveloped ideas.

Director Zelda Williams makes a strong feature debut, balancing the film’s tones and genres to create a horror-comedy gem that is both swooningly romantic and bitingly funny.

"Lisa Frankenstein" may be filled with clever nods to the 1980s golden age of horror comedies, but it's also an energetic, delightfully macabre production that might just be one of the most surprisingly entertaining of 2024.
