Academy Award winner Paul Newman stars as the legendary gunman Billy the Kid in this film adaptation of Gore Vidal's play. Staying closer to historical truth than the legends developed, this western drama follows young William Bonney, an illiterate murderous thug as he's befriended for the first time in his short life by the rancher Tunstall (Colin Keith-Johnston). But when Tunstall is killed, Bonney goes on a killing spree fueled by his uncontrollable rage that has gone on to become legendary in the lore of the American West.

A lively and influential psychological Western.

The performances still crackle with understated modernity, giving us a West of not just sagebrush, saddles and stereotypes, but of real people, ruthless and impulsive...who never let on that they know how this many-times-told story is going to end.

Paul Newman portrays the cow-country Rebel Without a Cause, Billy the Kid, in a western which is crammed with slambang action. Its characters, however, remain shadowy to the end.

To the part of Billy the Kid, he brings an air of moronic sensitivity that is very telling, very delinquent and disturbingly typical.
