Dark passions explode in this steamy, sinister love story starring Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges. Terry Brogan (Bridges), a cynical ex-football star, is hired to find Jessie Wyler (Ward), the runaway mistress of a ruthless L.A. nightclub owner, Jake Wise (James Woods). According to Jake, Jessie had stabbed him and vanished with $50,000. But Terry's mission is soon forgotten when he tracks down and falls in love with the beautiful Jessie on a Mexican island. Trouble brews, however, when Jake dispatches his henchman, Hank Sully (Alex Karras), to bring the lovers back. Driven by passion for the mysterious young woman, Terry quickly finds himself trapped in a complex web of corruption, betrayal, and murder. Hackford has an uncanny flair for thumping a story along at breakneck speed, ploughing through the most unyielding passages of plot exposition and the busiest shoals of plot twists.

The potential of the idea is sacrificed to a wild excess of plot and characters whose motives are generally as baffling as they are unpredictable.

Despite the longueurs and the underlying callowness, I enjoyed Against All Odds, though I can't see it lasting the way Tourneur's film has.

Alas it does not work, though Hackford, who made An Officer And A Gentleman, is the kind of director who always looks as if he is just about to make something interesting.

Against All Odds has its moments, but too often the film plays less like an official remake of Out of the Past and more like an unofficial prequel to Tequila Sunrise.
